Wah Tea Estate was established in 1857 in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh by the British. The estate saw decades of continuous cultivation, and even survived an earthquake which struck the region in 1905. The Wah estate was then taken over by Sir Sikander Hayat-Khan, the son of the Nawab of Wah in Pakistan, who named the estate after his birthplace. The word ‘Wah’ means ‘wow’, and a visit to the estate will hopefully elicit the same reaction!

In 1953, the estate was taken over by the Chaiwala family. The Chaiwala family has a rich history in the tea industry since the 1940s. As the family grew, the plantations were divided amongst the younger generations; however, the renowned ‘Chaiwala’ name continues to bind them together. Wah Tea Estate now looked after by the third and fourth generation of the family, Deepak and Surya Prakash.

As a young boy, Surya grew up visiting the tea garden several times a year. With each passing year, he came to appreciate the beauty and charm offered by the vast tracts of unpolluted, tranquil Kangra – a place where the pine-scented air is said to have curative powers. Years of travelling around the world compelled him to start sharing the experience at Wah, and with this, the idea for The Lodge at Wah was born.


The region experiences three major climates – summers, monsoons and winters. Each season bringing its own charm and beauty.

Summer (April to June): Summers in the Kangra Valley are pleasantly warm. During these months, the temperatures range from 15°C to 38°C (60°F to 100°F). The tea estate begins production in April, with the first flush beginning towards the end of March. Low rainfall gives plenty of opportunity to be outdoors. Visit during these months to enjoy outdoor activities and to experience the busiest season of tea production at the estate.

Monsoons (July to September): Monsoons in Kangra can be wet, bringing with it a lush beauty. Temperatures ranges between 22°C to 38°C (65°F to 100°F). The valley is at its most green during this period. This is the best time to lounge with hot cups of tea and a good book. Visit during these months to enjoy the property, the greenery and the continued tea production.

Winters (November to February): The Winters are cold in the valley, with minimum temperatures reaching as low as 0°C (32°F). One of the prettiest sights at this time is the beautiful snow-clad mountains, and snowfall can also be seen in the higher areas. Although the tea production comes to a pause, barbecues, hot cups of tea and the picturesque mountains can be truly enjoyed during these months.

Wah Tea Estate is spread over 526 acres and is nestled in the Kangra Valley in Himachal Pradesh. The proximity to the majestic Dhauladhar range allows for beautiful views of its snow-clad mountains almost around the year.

Palampur is located at 32.12°N 76.53°E below the Dhauladhar Range at an approximate height of 3800-4000 ft above sea level.

By Air: SpiceJet & Air India flights from Delhi to Dharamshala are just over an hour long. The estate is approximately 1 hour away from Dharamshala, and the roads are fairly smooth throughout the journey.

By Rail: Daily trains run to the closest railway station which is Pathankot, Punjab. The journey from there to the estate takes approximately 3 hours by road.

By Road: The estate is connected by well maintained paved roads.
